It’s easy to understand why so many women don’t comprehend the harm in a drag queen story hour. Many of them only know drag culture through the somewhat sanitized television versions. It’s hard to get that something you might perceive as fun dress-up and self-expression and cosplay as being inherently sexual. But for many men, gay and straight, the compulsion to cross-dress is a sexual fetish. Drag shows and drag balls were highly adult, explicit events until not long ago. Crassness, vulgarity, and misogyny are all baked into the culture.
So, drag is not appropriate children’s entertainment any more than pole-dancing classes for little girls are, and we object to those too.
So, the fact that Lancaster Public Library is having one of these events is concerning if not surprising. Representative David Zimmerman is asking people to contact the library and let them know that you object. We’ve attached a flyer from his office.
