Today, I dropped off a letter at Senator Art Haywood’s office, asking him to support the Save Women’s Sports Act. It’s got some personal references, but feel free to adapt it:
Dear Senator
I’m writing to ask you to consider breaking with your party to support Senate Bill 1191, The Save Women’s Sports Act.
I recognize that the Democratic Party vehemently opposes bills that recognize the material reality of biological sex, however, rank and file party members such as myself do not agree with this position. Women and girls have the right to compete in sports on a fair playing field.
The 2024 election was a terrible blow to the Democratic Party and many of its core values. However, allowing men to self-identify their way into sports, prisons and locker rooms goes against the values of fairness, feminism and science that Democrats claim to stand for. Many women feel abandoned by their party and don’t appreciate an attempt at gaslighting them into believing that there is no physical difference between men and women. I know for a fact that many Democratic women stayed home last November based on this issue alone, though I did not.
Last September, I spoke at the Women’s Declaration International Conference in Atlanta and I had the great pleasure of meeting State Senator Val Applewhite of North Carolina. She’s a passionate and committed Democrat who had the courage to stand up for women and girls when it came to sports. The party was angry with her, but her constituents supported her. She’s a brave woman and I am sure she would talk to you about her experience.
I am a part of several left-leaning organizations trying to get the Democratic Party to see reason on this issue. We don’t hate anyone, but we wish fairness and scientific reality to prevail. The Women’s Declaration International, The Women’s Liberation Front, PA 4 Sex-Based Rights and Democrats for an Informed Approach to Gender (Diag) are all great resources and are asking for your support.
Excellent letter, Melissa! I will use it to contact my state legislators.
Thank you! I saw that the the bill was in the PA House as HB 158, so I wrote to my state representative. He's vehemently anti-woman, but it only takes a second and I kind of enjoy writing.
