By now you might have heard that both US Senators from the great state of Pennsylvania supported and then yanked the funding of an all-ages alphabet soup (LGBTQ+) center in Philadelphia that hosted kink parties.
We can’t believe this should even be said, but no government-funded entity should host sex parties or kink parties of any kind. Full stop. That seems like a no-brainer. What people do and host with their private funds is their business, though we do reserve the right to judge. Kink shaming is a time-honored practice. As someone wise once said, “Beware of exotic pleasures, they ruin your taste for the ordinary ones.”
But one of the serious concerns here is the normalization of kink around young people and children. Whether it is at all-ages pride events or at a center like the one that was being funded, this isn’t okay for reasons that should be obvious. It’s grooming. Pride was always an adult event, so children shouldn’t be there. Safe spaces are supposed to be safe, not pipeline setups for predators.
On top of that, this incident highlights the homophobia inherent in the +TQIA movement and why so many gays and lesbians are calling for a divorce. Gay and lesbian people fought hard and for decades against the notion that being gay or lesbian was about sex acts. Back in the day, gay and lesbian organizations took care to present themselves as people with a hard-wired nature who had no interest in recruiting or promoting. Groups like NAMBLA were not welcome because non-predatory gay and lesbian people didn’t want predators in their community any more than straight people did.
So, we highly suggest contacting Casey and Fetterman’s offices and telling them what you think. While you’re at it, why not tell the Philadelphia Inquirer that it’s alarming and creepy to frame kink as very chill.
